Free mental health counseling extended to disaster survivors
– Ticket to Hope, a program offering free mental health counseling for survivors of the 2008 floods, tornadoes and storms has been extended through September.
“Ticket to Hope is designed to help people cope with the anxieties and stress brought on by the disasters that hit Iowa two years ago, including Iowans who survived those disasters only to have their anxieties reignited by this summer’s flooding ,” says Victoria Brenton, Ticket to Hope program manager for the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS).
Disaster survivors who are uninsured, those who have insurance but lack mental health coverage or those who have exhausted their mental health benefits can receive up to eight free counseling sessions. The program is a cooperative effort of the DHS and a network of Iowa-licensed mental health providers around the state.
Brenton says disaster survivors simply need to call the Ticket to Hope hotline, 1-800-447-1985. Staff at the hotline will verify the callers’ eligibility and provide them with a list of participating mental health counselors, along with up to eight vouchers that disaster survivors can present to the counselors to obtain free services.
The program initially was set to expire June 30. However, the continuing needs of disaster survivors and the availability of federal funding will allow the services to be offered for three additional months.
“Many Iowans continue to remain under stress from the economic and emotional damage they experienced in 2008, including some who have been traumatized again by the floods of 2010,” Brenton says. “Dozens have sought assistance through Ticket to Hope in the past three months, which tells us there still is considerable need for mental health services.”
Counselors say disasters can contribute to a wide variety of mental health symptoms, such as:
Inability to focus on normal daily activities
· Depression
· Lack of interest in hobbies
· Increased irritability, arguments, family conflicts including domestic violence
· Clinging, nightmares, aggressive or regressive behavior by children
· Illness and imagined illnesses by adults or children
· Increased fatigue or exhaustion
· Increased alcohol consumption and/or substance abuse
· Survivor’s guilt
Brenton and participating mental health counselors urge disaster survivors not to ignore their symptoms and to reach out for help. Instead, they should consider the services as treatment for a common health problem.

My newsletter for July 10th
Positive news for Iowa!
I think every week, if possible should start with some good news. I have always believed that it is much more helpful to look at the glass as half full, as opposed to half empty. Last week I gave a talk about all the great things Iowa has to be proud of, and had several requests to repeat those points. So here they are for your Monday;
1. Iowa is one of the few states that has money in a rainy day fund, savings
2. Iowa is one of 8 states that was given a AAA rating by all three top rating agencies in the country
3. The US Chamber of Commerce ranked Iowa 8th in the nation as “top performing economic states” and 4th in growth in exports.
4. The Iowa Business Council (made up of the CEO’s of the largest 20 companies in Iowa, and the Presidents of the 3 Iowa Universities) stated that major indicators are trending up for Iowa businesses
5. Forbes ranked Des Moines as the number 1 best place in the nation to raise a family!
6. After keeping the state budget balanced last session, state revenues are running ahead of projections and the state budget could end the year with a $180 million SURPLUS.
7. A nationwide Manpower survey ranks Iowa as 3rd best employment outlook in the nation.
While many middle class families are still struggling, our economy is begining to turn around and Iowa is in a much better place than most every other state. We need to work to keep improving that trend!
The Legislature made good on another promise to Iowa’s middle class families this week – all four-year olds would have access to quality preschool so they enter school ready to learn. After expanding each year since the initiative started in 2007, over 21,000 four-year olds in 326 school districts across Iowa will be in school at least 10 hours each week thanks to the state’s voluntary preschool program.

US Chamber of Commerce rating/ Keep the same course????
Iowa ranked 8th by the US Chamber of Commerce and the National Chamber Foundation for “top economic-performing states”, due to stats compiled by the Chamber dealing with entrepreneurship, innovation and exports. Also ranked 7th in “top export performers” due to overseas trade offices. Ranks 4th in growth of exports. Should Iowa keep on the same track for 2011???
